TURNS OUT, YOUR CUSTOMERS AREN'T GOOGLING YOU ANYMORE

Quick, honest question: when was the last time you actually typed something into Google to find a local business?
If you're anything like most people these days, you probably just scrolled Instagram or TikTok until something caught your eye instead.
Turns out that's not just a vibe — it's the new normal, and the data backs it up.

THE SEARCH BAR ISN'T THE FRONT DOOR ANYMORE
According to Constant Contact's 2026 small business marketing research (constantcontact.com/blog/small-business-marketing-statistics), 49% of consumers now discover new small businesses through social media, compared to just 40% who find them through search engines.
Social platforms have officially pulled ahead as the number-one way people stumble onto a business for the first time.
That's a big deal if your marketing plan still treats social media like a nice-to-have side project while SEO gets all the attention (or vice versa — we see both). The businesses winning right now are the ones showing up consistently where people are actually scrolling.
OKAY, SO WHAT DO YOU ACTUALLY DO ABOUT IT?
You don't need to be everywhere, and you definitely don't need to dance on camera if that's not your thing. Here's where we'd point your energy first:
Pick two platforms max and post consistently, rather than five platforms sporadically. Consistency beats volume every time.
Show your face, your team, or your workspace. People follow people, not logos — especially for local, service-based businesses.
Treat your profile like a storefront window. Bio, highlights, and pinned posts should answer "what do you do and why should I care" in about three seconds.
Don't abandon search entirely — a decent Google Business Profile still matters for people who are ready to buy right now, not just browsing.
ONE MORE STAT WORTH KNOWING
Here's the part that surprised us: that same Constant Contact research found the share of U.S. consumers who say they prefer shopping at small businesses nearly tripled between 2021 and 2026 — up to 27% from just 10%.
People genuinely want to support small businesses like yours. Showing up consistently on social media is often the only thing standing between that goodwill and an actual customer.
The catch? Nearly half of consumers (49%) also say they've had to cut back spending at small businesses because of rising costs, per the same report. So it's not just about being seen — it's about giving people a clear, easy reason to choose you when they do have room in the budget.
